#9 Master the Art of Putting in 3 Minutes: Save Your Wallet and Your Score!
Hey there, fellow golfers! It’s your friendly neighborhood mid-lifer, 40s Golf, back with another reality check for your game.
Did you all get a chance to practice the tips from my last post on how to escape those dreaded driver sky balls and worm-burners? I hope so. Because while launching a 250-yard bomb straight down the fairway feels absolutely electric, let’s be honest about where the real magic (and your hard-earned money) happens. Yep, you guessed it—right on the dance floor. The green.
As the old legendary golf saying goes: "Drive for show, putt for dough."
Let me tell you a quick secret from my early beginner days. My absolute biggest regret was spending hours at the driving range just mindlessly smashing drivers and irons, completely ghosting the putting green. I used to think, "Hey, putting is just tapping a ball into a hole. How hard could it be?" Oh boy, was I wrong. During my very first real round, I racked up four-putts and five-putts like it was my job. My mental game didn't just crack; it completely shattered.
Thankfully, a close buddy of mine—a seasoned single-digit handicap player—saved my sanity. He grabbed me by the shoulders and said, "Listen, 40s Golf, putting boils down to just three fundamental steps." Today, I’m dropping that exact knowledge bomb on you for free. If you want to transform from the "designated three-putter" into the "putting wizard" among your weekend buddies, give me just three minutes of your undivided attention!
1. The Starting Line: Address and Grip (Fix This and You're Halfway There)
Putting is an entirely different beast compared to your driver or iron swing. Forget about aggressive body rotation. The core philosophy here is pure physics—think of a simple, honest pendulum motion. What goes straight back must come straight forward.
📌 Keep Your Eyes Directly Over the Ball!
The very first thing my single-handicap buddy pointed out was my eyeline, and it changed everything.
When you set up for your address, the ball needs to be positioned directly under your left eye (assuming you're right-handed). Experts talk a lot about your "dominant eye," but let’s keep it simple for beginners. Just trust the pros and drop it under your left eye.
Pro-tip to double-check your alignment: Get into your putting stance, hold a second golf ball right up to your left eye, and let it drop. If it lands directly on top of the ball on the ground? Congratulations, you passed. This ensures your line of sight is perfectly parallel to your target line.
📌 Lock Down Those Wrists
When you’re hitting a full shot, you want smooth, active wrists. When you’re putting? Active wrists are a one-way ticket to Three-Putt Purgatory.
When gripping your putter, place both thumbs flat down the top edge of the grip in a straight line.
Don't squeeze the life out of the club with your palms. Instead, focus on a firm, secure feel that completely locks your wrists from snapping or bending during the stroke.
2. The Pendulum Mechanism: Cemented Lower Body & The Shoulder Pentagon
Now that you’ve got the stance, how do you actually roll it? The golden rule of the putting stroke is simple: "Lower body like wet cement, upper body like a clock pendulum."
[The Perfect Putting Visual]
Head & Hips Frozen ➔ Maintain the 'Pentagon' Shape of Your Arms & Shoulders ➔ Rock Back and Forth Like a Pendulum!
When I was a beginner, my worst habit was instantly whipping my head around the second I hit the ball to see if it was going in. Spoiler alert: doing this opens up your shoulders prematurely, pushing the ball completely off-line.
Listen with your ears, not your eyes: After making contact, keep your eyes glued to the grass. Train yourself to hear the beautiful sound of the ball rattling into the bottom of the cup. For any short putt within 15 feet, you should always rely on your ears to celebrate, not your eyes!
Maintain the Pentagon: Lightly tuck your armpits in and lock the pentagon (or triangle) shape formed by your arms and shoulders. This geometry should not break throughout the entire stroke. Remember, you aren't flicking the ball with your hands; you are gently pushing and pulling it with the big muscles in your shoulders.
3. Nailing the Distance: It’s All About Backswing Control
Let’s be real for a second—distance control is arguably the most critical part of putting. Why? Because your local caddie or your golf buddy can usually help you read the line, but nobody else can feel the speed for you. Until you break into the 80s, trust the line given to you and focus 100% on distance. If you miss, there is a 90% chance you either deceleration or pushed it.
When I used to ask my mentor how on earth to stop blasting the ball past the hole, his answer was brilliant: "Stop trying to hit the ball with power. Let the size of your backswing dictate the distance."
Too many beginners try to control distance by adjusting how hard they pop the ball at impact. That variance creates wildly inconsistent speeds, leaving your scorecard looking like a rollercoaster.
The 1:1 Rule: If your backswing travels a distance of '1', your follow-through should also travel a distance of '1'. Keep the tempo smooth and equal.
Establish Your Personal Yardstick: Build your own baseline during practice. For example, a backswing that stops at your right big toe might mean a perfect 15-foot roll. A backswing to the outside of your right foot might mean 30 feet. Find your personal rhythm and stick to it.
4. The 40s Golf Special: Easy Home Drills That Cost $0
We get it. Life as a busy professional in your 40s means you can't live at the practice facility. Here are two fantastic, budget-friendly drills you can do right in your living room:
The Carpet Tracker: Roll out a simple putting mat. Instead of obsessing over whether the ball goes into the plastic hole, focus entirely on whether your putter face is traveling straight back to the exact size you intended.
The Steel Ruler Challenge: Grab a standard 3-foot steel ruler from a hardware store. Place your ball at one end and try to putt it so it rolls all the way off the other end without falling off the sides. If you can keep it on the metal track consistently, you’re officially a better putter than half the guys at your local club.
Wrapping Up
Mastering the fundamentals of putting is the absolute fastest way to shave strokes off your handicap.
It doesn't matter if you smash a gorgeous 250-yard drive right down the center of the fairway—if you follow it up with a tragic three-putt or four-putt on the green, writing that score down is going to hurt. (Trust me, I lived that nightmare last year! 😭)
This weekend, spend just 10 minutes on your living room rug practicing these three things: 1) Ball under the left eye, 2) Locked wrists, and 3) Pendulum shoulders. Do this, and you’ll be happily taking lunch money from your regular foursome during your next round.
